Look for the Cowboy Hat.
If you've ever walked the floor at Bob Stall, you've probably seen the cowboy hat. That's Bill. He wears one every day, has for years, and at this point it's basically part of the building.
Bill was born at Mercy Hospital in 1959. Sixty-six years later, he still hasn't left San Diego — and almost 30 of those years have been spent at Bob Stall Chevrolet. He started on June 23, 1999, and never had a reason to walk back out the door. The longevity isn't unusual here, he's quick to point out: there are team members on the floor with 20, 36, even 44 years in. After Mr. Bob Stall passed, his sons kept the family operation going. Same culture. Same kind of people who tend to stay.
Today, Bill is one of Bob Stall's Sales Managers — overseeing deals across the entire sales team and stepping in personally to help each and every customer. If you're shopping at Bob Stall, there's a good chance Bill is part of your purchase whether or not you sit down with him directly.
Where he steps in directly tends to share a theme: he's spent four decades learning how to help people who've been told "no" somewhere else. Bankruptcy, repossession, a stretch of financial hardship still on your record — that's the conversation he wants to have. There are programs for buyers in those situations most people don't know about: no money down, deferred payments, flexible financing. Bill will walk you through what's actually possible, in plain language, and won't rush you to a decision.
"The only pressure around here is the air in the tires."
— Billy Shaw, Sales ManagerIt's how Bill works. Listening more than talking, letting customers take the time they need — overnight, a week, however long. He's spent four decades watching how that approach builds trust, and the repeat business and family-to-family referrals are the proof.
When Other Dealers Say No.
As a sales manager, Bill is involved in every deal that runs through the floor — but the ones he takes on personally tend to share a theme. He's not a CPA, but four decades of doing the math next to customers means he knows the programs, the lenders, and the paperwork that turn a "no" somewhere else into a "yes" here — at terms that actually work.

5 Stars from Brian Johns. ZR1 Corvette.
"Scott & Billy made the entire process very easy. Kept me informed."

San Diego Lifer.
Bill was born at Mercy Hospital and has lived in San Diego for all 66 years of his life. He and his wife now live in El Cajon — which is, in his words, a compromise. If it were entirely up to him, he'd have a small farm with horses, chickens, pigs, cows, and a fishing lake out the back door. His wife, however, is not a fan of mice or snakes. So El Cajon it is. Rural-ish, close to everything, no surprises in the kitchen.
His drive to Bob Stall is under 15 minutes with virtually no traffic. Twenty-seven years in, that has not lost its appeal.
What he loves about San Diego is the easy stuff: the weather, the people, how accessible everything is, and a lifestyle he calls genuinely low-stress. When customers ask for a recommendation, he sends them to The Brigantine.
When the family wants a day out, the rotation is steady — the Zoo, SeaWorld, Balboa Park, the beach, or a hike up Cowles Mountain — usually followed by pancakes, because the granddaughters always have an opinion about pancakes.
Favorite Local Spots
- The Brigantine — the go-to recommendation
- San Diego Zoo & SeaWorld
- Balboa Park — anytime
- Cowles Mountain — for the walk
- House of Pancakes — by family demand
Neighborhood
- Lives in El Cajon
- Born at Mercy Hospital — San Diego native
- 66 years a San Diegan
- Under 15 minutes from Bob Stall
Country Music. A Cowboy Hat. Three Granddaughters.
The cowboy hat isn't a costume. It tracks with the rest of him. Bill loves country music more than rock and soul, has a real soft spot for animals, and would happily live on a small farm with horses, chickens, pigs, cows, and a fishing lake out the back door — if his wife weren't firmly opposed to mice and snakes. So El Cajon it is. Rural-ish, close to everything, no surprises in the kitchen.
He's been married to the same woman for 34 years. Together they raised three kids — two daughters and a son — and now have three granddaughters whose names tell you everything: Faith, Hope, and Miracle. Those three are, in his exact words, the lights of his life and the apple of his eye.
He also admires good comedians enough that he says he'd try stand-up someday if he ever worked up the courage. The Tahoe — what he calls his "Grandpa Mobile" — is the family vehicle of choice for trips to the zoo, SeaWorld, Balboa Park, Cowles Mountain, or the inevitable post-hike pancakes.

- - Born at Mercy Hospital — 66 years a San Diegan
- - 27 years at Bob Stall, 40 in automotive
- - Married 34 years — same wonderful woman
- - Three granddaughters: Faith, Hope & Miracle
- - Country music over rock and soul, no question
- - Would try stand-up comedy if he ever worked up the nerve
- - Would live on a farm if his wife allowed mice and snakes
